Brent Canode (Executive Director)
Brent Canode became the Club's Executive Director in 2006. From 2006-2008 he designed and implemented the capital campaign that made possible the recent restoration of the Club's landmark support center. Brent brings to the Club more than ten years of experience in policy analysis, program development, fundraising and non-profit management. He has worked for a diverse mix of elected officials, non-profit organizations and government agencies. Brent completed his Masters Degree in Public Affairs at the University of Oregon, concentrating his final project on a review of national program research on prison-based drug treatment programs and their impacts on criminal recidivism. Brent currently serves on the board of Partnership for Safety and Justice as well as the board of Partnership for Safety and Justice's affiliated 501c4 organization, the Safety and Justice Action Fund.
Marilu Reid (President)
Marilu retired to the Portland area from Reno, Nevada where she owned an optical business for twenty years. During that time she was appointed to the Nevada State Board of Dispensing Opticians by Governor Robert Miller and served for eight years. During this period she implemented support groups for individuals with Macular Degeneration and a program for children of low income families to receive free eye examinations and eye wear. Since arriving in Portland Marilu has served on the Board of Directors for the Rental Sales Gallery of the Portland Art Museum, CASA and the Board of Directors of the Alano Club of Portland. Marilu joined he board in 2008 and is passionate about the needs of Club members and providing holiday dinners for the Club’s extended community.
Annalise Briggs (Vice-President)
Annalise Briggs has worked for the Portland-based international relief and development organization, Mercy Corps since 2007. As the manager of their monthly giving program, her responsibilities include fundraising, managing mailings, developing content and strategy, increasing donor cultivation and rentention. Previously, she worked in broadcast production for Wieden + Kennedy from 2003-07. She recieved a B.S. degree in marketing and advertising from Portland State University. Born in Brazil, Annalise grew up in Miami and has traveled to Bosnia, France, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, the Netherlands, Singapore and the United Kingdom. She joined the Alano Club of Portland in 2010, is a member of Toastmasters, loves antiquing and her favorite place to visit is Bali.
Brad Schwartz (Treasurer)
Brad Schwartz is a program manager for Intel’s sales and marketing organization. He currently leads several initiatives focused on improving sales and marketing effectiveness and efficiency. Brad’s 12 year tenure at Intel also includes positions within the Finance and IT departments. Prior to Intel, Brad received his MBA and Masters in Information Systems from the University of Arizona. Brad has been an Alano Club of Portland board member since 2005.
Aubin Allman (Secretary)
Aubin Allman is a student at Portland State University and will graduate soon with her BA in psychology. After graduation she hopes to pursue a career in social services, specifically working with children and young adults. To date Aubin’s work history has been defined by more than anything her overarching goal to survive life as a college student on more than Top Raman noodles! She is currently a professional make-up artist and esthetician but has worked in the past as a pastry chef, a tutor, and an office assistant in a variety of professional settings. Aubin joined the Alano Club of Portland board in 2010 and has already made an impact as an effective advocate for Portland’s growing young people’s recovery community. Aubin is a Portland native and enjoys hiking, swimming and snowboarding, something she even did competitively for a few years.
Robert Brand (Past President)
Bob Brand has been on the Alano Board since 2007 and President since January, 2009. Bob retired to Portland following a 24 year career with International Paper, one of the world’s largest forest products companies, where he was a Corporate Director of Human Resources and had responsibility for areas such as Executive Development, Recruiting, Compensation and Benefits, Labor Relations, Communications and Training. He has served in leadership positions in several for-profit as well as non-profit organizations over the years. His service experience began with the Boy Scouts of America where he became an Eagle Scout and Assistant Scoutmaster at the age of 16, and continued through military service, managerial positions in business, and in retirement with work on boards and committees in several organizations. Bob was born in New York City and received his B.A. degree in 1963 from The City College of New York. He is married and has two grown children and grandchildren.
Steve Haines
Steve Haines professional experience includes 23 years of implementing sales and marketing strategies with local, national and global accounts for Xerox Corporation. Steve Haines has been an Alano Club of Portland board member since 2002 and was board president from 2005 – 2008, during the Club’s successful multi-year capital improvements campaign. Steve has also served as the local co-chair of the Xerox Community Involvement Program (XCIP) since 1995. XCIP directs seed money to local projects identified and executed by local Xerox employees. Steve was also appointed as a community at large member of the Oregon Hospice Association (OHA) board of directors from 2000-2002. OHA’s primary responsibility is to provide information on hospice services to the public.
Dr. Ron Schutz
Ronald W. Schutz, MD, FACC has been a practicing cardiologist in Portland since 1980. He is President of Heart Sounds, Inc., Medical Director of Heart Centers of America, LLC, and CEO of Blacktoe Medical, Inc., having founded each entity. He was Medical Director of The Oregon Heart Institute 1987-1991, and The Legacy Heart Institute 2004-2006. He has served on the board of Alano Club of Portland since 2004. He served on the Citizens Budget Advisory Committee of Multnomah County 2004-2009. Ron’s previous volunteer board memberships include the Oregon Affiliate of the American Heart Association, The Jewish Federation of Portland, and Jewish Family and Child Services. He is a private pilot with instrument and multi-engine ratings, an avid swimmer, horseback rider, and aspiring ukulele player.
Jeff Dreyer
Jeff has lived and worked in the Portland area since 1955. He has been a mortgage banker since 1997 and is currently a senior mortgage banker with Directors Mortgage Co., named the #1 charitable small businesses in Oregon in 2009. Jeff has been involved with service at the Alano Club of Portland since 1986 and has been on the board since 2005. Jeff is also a skilled musician who has played drums with many of the City’s finest musical talents.
Sheila Schmid
Sheila Schmid is the owner of Yoga NW, a community yoga studio in NW Portland. Prior to opening Yoga NW Sheila taught yoga all over the country at various studios, as well as conducted yoga retreats and workshops for students and new yoga teachers. She has also opened and managed other yoga studios in Portland and Hood River, OR. Along the way, she acquired a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in counseling. For 15 year she worked as a professional counselor in various settings including schools, hospitals, private practices and community clinics. Sheila has served on the board of the Alano Club of Portland since 2006 and has enthusiastically lead the Club’s annual membership drive since 2007.
Jon Wadman
Jon has lived in Portland for the past 20 years, inching ever so close to “near-native” status. Jon joined the board in 2010, bringing with him more than 8 years of volunteer experience with Portland’s recovery community. An avid outdoorsman, Jon is passionate about Oregon’s natural environment and all it has to offer. You can often find Jon hiking in the Gorge, alpine skiing throughout the Northwest, rafting Oregon’s scenic rivers and exploring Portland’s unique cultural landscape. Jon spends his time volunteering at several non-profits and believes strongly that doing so is the most effective (and rewarding) way to make our community a stronger and more vibrant place to live, work and play. On the more serious side of life, Jon currently splits his time between real estate and private asset management.
