In 2007 the Alano Club of Portland celebrates sixty years of service to Portland’s recovery community! Even as we celebrate this significant milestone, the Club is facing a daunting roster of capital improvements, preventative maintenance projects and interior updates imperative to the sustainability and functionality of our historic recovery support center. Indeed, the steady increase in Club attendance over the past six decades has taken a heavy toll on our landmark facility.
The criticality of these pending projects fueled a year of diligent preparation and planning in 2006, leading up to the recent launch of the Club’s most ambitious fundraising effort to date: The Alano Club of Portland Century Campaign, a comprehensive capital improvements and endowment-building campaign, respectively titled Building a Foundation for the Future and Funding a Foundation for the Future.
This month we kick-off the capital phase of the Century Campaign, with the goal of raising $270,000 by the end of 2007. The success of our capital phase will ensure that the Alano Club’s long-standing support center remains a safe and inviting place for future generations in need, while a successful endowment phase will provide the Club with a reliable and adequate revenue stream to meet future maintenance requirements. Together, both campaigns provide for a secure and sustainable future for Portland’s oldest, largest and most diverse recovery support resource!
We are thrilled at the amazing level of support of campaign has attracted this past year. To date, our Century Campaign has already raised over $200,000 for the Club’s biggest makeover ever! We’re over 75% there and now we need your help to bring it home! Please join our growing list of supporters by making a donation today.
After reviewing the information on our website, we hope you will consider the impact the Club has had on your own recovery, or the value it’s brought to countless others, and commit to making a leadership gift today. We would be proud and fortunate to have your support!

We are also aware of what would happen to the community were you not available for them and the economic impact that would have on the State of Oregon and its citizens. We fully support your efforts to raise funds for a capital campaign.”
---Ann Uhler, Chair, Governor’s Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs
"We are pleased to announce our enthusiastic support for the Alano Club of Portland’s Century Campaign: Building a Foundation for the Future. For six decades the Alano Club of Portland has been a vital source of healing and support to recovering alcoholics, addicts and their families. Simply put, we can ill afford to lose such a valuable and effective community resource. There simply aren’t enough church basements to accommodate the thousands of recovering individuals and families who rely on your organization for their long-term recovery needs!”
---Shelia L. North, Executive Director, DePaul Treatment Centers
"Community-based organizations like the Alano Club of Portland are a critical resource to the recovering community in all stages of a person’s recovery. The supportive clean and sober environment offered by the Alano Club is vital to the earliest days of an individual’s recovery. These resources are also important to people in sustaining their recovery over months, years, and decades. I support the efforts of the Alano Club to continue its important work for many more years.”
---Richard L. Harris, Executive Director, Central City Concern
"As Medical Co-Director of Serenity Lane Treatment Center for the past five years, I have witnessed directly the powerful role the Alano Club of Portland has played in the recovery of many of our patients living in the Portland area. I can attest to this not only from knowledge of my patients in treatment, but from my own experience years ago as a newly sober person. What I experienced was what I have since heard innumerable others say—“having been to churches, ‘clubs’, and other locations devoted to recovery all over the world, the Alano Club of Portland is unlike any other such place in terms of beauty, serenity, and the inspiration it generates.” ---Richard Caesar, M.D., Medical Co-Director Serenity Lane Treatment Centers
"We are very pleased that you contacted us to seek our endorsement for your Century Campaign. Here at Hazelden, we are fortunate to see the miracle of recovery. We know that it is possible because of organizations like the Alano Club of Portland, a place where people can find support and fellowship in their on going recovery. It is vitally important that organizations that assist with long-term sobriety such as yours remain open to serve the community." ---Jan Vondrachek, Executive Director, Hazelden Springbrook
